Our Firm

Our History

Today
Today, Kavinoky Cook, LLP has evolved into a business–focused law firm that provides a high level of sophistication, privacy and personal attention to all matters. We do many of the things that much larger firms do in the areas of commercial transactions, business formation, mergers and acquisitions, venture financing, tax, securities law, protecting intellectual property, environmental law, employment law, business immigration and related litigation and arbitration. Unlike larger firms that rely on introducing specialists as issues arise, our partners are responsible for every matter we handle. Our partners have the experience and breadth to do this. If we need expertise that we do not have within the firm, we do not hesitate to draw upon specialists outside the firm. But generally, our philosophy is that you get the lawyer you hired, not a crew of specialists. Our focus on Canadian companies doing business in the U.S. began in 1989 when we established an office in the business district of downtown Toronto. Our partner, Jonathan Rodwin moved to Toronto and lived in Toronto for two years and has travelled frequently to Toronto since then. We maintained the office for over 15 years until it became clear that e-mail and the internet was replacing face-to-face meetings. We have unique experience in the areas of cross-border transactions, Canadian companies doing business in the U.S. (including the formation of U.S. subsidiaries), cross-border tax issues and securities law compliance for public companies whose shares trade in the U.S. and Canada. We also handle business related immigration matters for our Canadian and other international clients.
Currently, we have five lawyers who knew Edward Kavinoky. Most of us knew Arnold Gardner and many of us were trained by him. We stand on their shoulders.
